Default Nov/Dec 2011 Lite Challenge Entry: Hagarin Observatory

All right, this is then my official post for jumping into the contest.
Nothing much to show yet but at least I fulfill the "5 days rule" to be able to participate. Just hope I'll be able to finish it up in time.

Lots of people have decided to go for a region map so I decided to do something else.
The map will be about an observatory hidden in the woods.
The design will be a blend of battle map (kind of), 2D elevation and small region area to show where it's located. The whole thing will have a nice (hopefully) frame with bits of artworks. The sketch is already done and I will scan it properly when finished. It's A3 size.

Dain, that looks excellent even in sketch form - I'm eager to see more updates and a finished product!

    Thanks for your comments,
This challenge brings me a lot of pleasure. Hope it'll give you the same for your eyes at term.

Still many things to do. Cast shadow for instance, that will change a lot of things, and the frame as well.
The building itself will be cut in half.
Right side will be a view from outside
Left side will show the inside of the building so it will be more "mappy".

    Thanks,
I do like this kind of hatching. I've been practicing this for a long time now and always miss them if I don't use them everymonth. It's a kind of personal therapy to release the daily stress. And it's free

    Next update:
I need now to do the cast shadow and polish everything up a little bit

I'm voting for you if I can use this for my sandbox campaign tonight . One of the most important rules of sandbox refereeing/DMing - good enough is good enough so I have to do a rush job on about 5 dungeons in the next hour.

    Of course you can!
This is actually why I always try to draw map that can be used straight away by rpg players, whatever their world may be. It'll be an honor

Found some time to get work done. Still bits to do here and there
I wonder if I need/ must draw something on the area above the north sign... any ideas?

This time, it is a proper scan/ stitch, because of the A3 size. If there is any issue with what have been done, please let me know.

No, I'd leave the bit there open. It looks more like an observatory, the little man looking into space and so forth.

Beautiful work. Very smooth combination of map/ elevation/ locator map.

I'm imagining a critical set of observations being made on a cold winter night, and the cranky astronomer on duty angrily climbing down and plugging the chimney on his side of the building, when for the fourteenth time a cloud of dense pine smoke and sparks obscures the target stars, not to mention setting alight his best fur coat. "If I told Ostronimius once I've told him a thousand times 'the seasoned maple at evening, the pitchy pine logs in daytime'! Grrrr. Witless whelp."
