Just create a duplicate image (image->duplicate), then resize and save that one as a jpg.
Nice colours and land texture, btw.

Trying out some stuff as a new GIMP user. Comments welcome. Original size is 3600x3000 px.
Quick question: Is there an easy way to save a large original image down to a smaller resolution in GIMP without changing the original image, saving to png, and then returning the image to original size?

Heh... I should hope you like it, its almost totally from your regional map tutorial. I have played with it a bit to put more texture in the ocean via bump map (slightly) and added more noise over top of the ocean. I did use your height map Tut to make the land though to get the more variable coastline jaggies instead though...
Now on to try mountains again. My first try turned out quite horribly bad, but I have had a few more days to play with GIMP and some thoughts are starting to gel in my head a bit.

Yeah- everyone seems to have an issue with the mountains....Think I gotta rework it.
