Most maps I draw are fairly open and always hand drawn, like they would've used in medieval times. Also because I can't afford software.

    Welcome! That's a lovely map.
If you're interested, there are free alternatives for software that are similar to some of the big ones, and many tutorials around here are written specifically for them. The GIMP in place of Photoshop is often used by members of this forum, and Inkscape (like Illustrator) for vector work. There are many others which are useful, available for a smaller amount, but those are the big two alternatives. I have a passion for handmade works, though, so I'm not going to try to talk you into switching. I look forward to seeing what you post.

    1. Welcome to the Guild!
    2. That's really great work, I love the runes.
    3. You could do a lot worse than to cultivate Chashio as your sensei.

    Welcome to the Guild, Sam!

And i agree with what has been said - lovely work. And i also dig those asian-looking signs. Is this a made up language? Can you tell us a bit about this world the map is for?
Also, have some Rep. for a map in the first post.

Hello, Sam! I"m new here as well. As soon as I posted my introduction, I saw your thread and looked at your sample. Great work! If you ever get some software together, I'd like to see more.

That is awesome looking! Your coastlines flow, and look very natural/realistic, and those mountains, while simple are freakin' gorgeous! And those city designs...
I might take a couple hints from this

Welcome to the Guild Sam! You've got a nice hand-drawn style. As to free software, GIMP is a wonderful program, but for drawing/painting I'd recommend checking out a paint program such as Mypaint or Scribus. Bother are great free programs. The former has a user-friendly interface and is quick to pick up. The latter has more of a learning curve, but is incredibly robust.

    Cheers,
