How do I get a rectangular projection from an ortographic projection

In other words, how do I convert such a flat image:
3471676.jpg

into this different kind of flat image?
under.jpg

Of course from a single disk I can only get half a rectangular map... but that's what I need!
Is there any free SW capable of doing that?

a few ways

they depend on the operating system and software you use
i type a lot so i use the terminal

even on MS windows i install a REAL!!! shell and use BASH

mmps can be used for a "eye balling " of the latitudes and longitudes

or the best tool is " gdalwarp " and proj4

gdal is a ALL terminal text based tool

but
there is a GUI that can be used

Qgis can install on Linux, Apple, and Windows .

just geo reference the original image and then remap it


now the GIS software i use almost everyday is specialized ( VERY SPECIALIZED ) ISIS3 for interplanetary images

so that is my "go to software " for most things

but the qgis gui to gdal dose work very very well

thanks, but how do I reference an image? actually I'd just need to assume that center point is lat,lon=0,0

for assuming that the center is 0 long 0 lat
mmps will do
there can be a file name collision if "GMT" is also installed
-- if so rename the mmsp "project" to "MMPSproject"

MMPSproject -w 1024 -h 512 -scale 0.9 -i orthographic -f  3471676.ppm > 3471676test.ppm

but it is not
( lat and long is a very loose guess )

MMPSproject -long -98 -lat 39 -w 1024 -h 512  -i orthographic -f  3471676.ppm > 3471676test1.ppm
