I don't think I've posted this. It's something I've been working on alongside my other map. It's basically meant as a visual reference to me when I describe the people and cultures that inhabit the main continent. The island that I have been faffing about with is to the west of this continent (at least that's how I've always thought of it, but err plate tectonics and geology &c. &c. &c.) but it's not easily reachable because of ocean currents and things. Except the islanders know how to get over this and have enjoyed complete control over the trade with the continent.
Anyway it's a sort of rough and ready visual guide for me to remember the various terrains, climates and cultures that exist there. They are loosely based on cultures that exist in this imaginary world we call 'reality' but sort of caricatured. For example the Kentromis people believe that they are the centre of the whole universe and the gods created them first, and predisposed to break out into sudden bouts of philosophy. The Lomegians have an air of superiority because of their wines and cheeses. The Vaticians consider themselves great lovers and the Bravans are adept at eking out an existence in trying conditions. They tend to get drunk and fight a lot, are fiercely territorial and will defend their neighbours against 'foreign' tribes unless their neighbours happen to be the most foreign people around, then they become the enemy.
I used GIMP to make the base map and then Inkscape to place the text as I found it's a lot easier. I haven't thought up names for the cities, rivers nor the mountains just yet. I did consider conlanging but I'm just going to base it loosely on existing languages for the various tribal cultural areas.
I've put this in WIP as it's not finished but I don't know if it ever will be. Let me know if you can see any obvious improvements that can be made though and be as harsh as you like because even if I don't apply things to this map it'll stand me in good stead for future projects, I'm sure
