So I found these in my basement.

I tried to get this to install using DosBox... there are about 8 files that say they have 10 kb of data but are actually 0 b. I'm guessing time has taken its toll. The install actually runs until you have to switch to disk 2... It was worth a shot.

Providing you still have the licence number you could try contacting Profantasy?

I've read threads over there by people with older versions, but I've never seen one as old as that (20 years old), so I can't really say what the reaction might be, apart from surprise and curiosity! LOL!

The current versions are: CC3+ and DD3. I think the software went through CC2 and CC3 between what you've got there, and what there is now.

There wasn't a license number, there was just a serial number back then... (hand written in pen on the disk which is why I stacked them the way I did...)

In 1994 I would have been 12 and playing D&D. I don't even have the box or documentation anymore some how the disks ended up in one of those floppy disks storage containers I have. I had almost forgotten about it.

You know what, I may just contact them, if nothing else it should get an interesting reaction.

I did sign up for their forums, how do you navigate that forum? I'm not use to Vanilla forums... vBulletin, phpBB, SMF, all easy to follow... Vanilla it just seems odd. maybe I'll bet use to it.

I had to get used to this one when I joined up here. I kept hitting all the wrong buttons and I took ages to work out how to quote multiple comments in the same response etc. But then - Profantasy's forum was the first forum I ever joined

The stickies at the top of the page contain a whole world of helpful information - well worth reading. Everything from forum rules to image upload sizes and tutorials. There are also a lot of free symbol resources for CC3 users.

But Dark - I thought you were a hand drawn - PS - GIMP mapper... or is this CC investigation just a trip down memory lane ?


EDIT: Zhar2 - until quite recently (last year in fact) I had a set of multi-coloured ones of the type that were popular back in the very early 90's - red, orange, yellow, green, blue...and white... sat on the mantelpiece in their authentic disc box, along with my original 100% authentic Rubik's Cube! LOL! I kept the cube, but I wish I'd kept the discs as well now - little curios from an age gone by.

Nothing to be sorry about, there was no offense taken (sorry if my response sounded that way) I just have a weird sense of humor. Along with picking on myself, I tend to respond with song lyrics as well... I'm sure there is a defined condition for that. Long story short, it takes a lot to offend me. I doubt you will ever get there, so no worries.

Technically, I'm a gamer with a need for maps. I like to draw, and can draw decently. I'm new to mapping, except for the fact that my brother and I bought CC when we were kids to aid our D&D adventures. So I have used CC before (never got good with it) about 22 years ago...

As far as PS - GIMP - I usually use paint.net, I have a slightly older version of PS (not quite 1994 era lol) that my wife uses more than me but I don't know how to use it well enough to do anything similar to what other people here can do. I will eventually attempt to go there. I may wait until I get a decent tablet so I can make use of a stylus. My mouse drawing skills are seriously lacking.

As far as my intent with this. It was more curiosity if I could get it to work. I'm a software developer by trade, and recently I've been playing with some old games and things on floppy disks that I have found. And since I have joined this group, I totally would have attempted to make a map with it if it worked.

Also, I too have a Rubik's cube on my desk at work.

Wow! Version 1.1. That's pretty neat. I'll ask to see if we have any but my guess is that we don't or, if we even did, they'd be as degraded and unusable as yours. Still, I'll ask in case there's a zip file as you say. I'll be honest though and say you're probably correct that it's a long shot.

Until about 10 years ago I still had software on 5.25" disks. Some of them were from 1987/88. I was persuaded there was no need to hang onto them when I didn't even have a drive for them any more. A lot of old stuff went when I moved house then. When my father died in 2009 I was clearing some things from the house and came across an old computer magazine from 1994. There was an advert for an internal CD drive (there was no speed indicated, there was no need, it ran at normal speed) which was a snip at only £300. I think the 486DX was just starting to emerge back then. I don't know if I managed to keep that magazine or whether it sort of got binned during the last move we made 4 years ago.

In 1994 I had a 386 with a 40MB (yes, megabytes) hard drive. I managed to get that up to 70ish MB equivalent using Stacker. Stacker was an amazing piece of software that let you store almost twice as much data on your disk by compressing the whole disk. It was also amazing in its ability to totally crash with no warning, requiring a full reinstall. I think there are still clinics full of people receiving counselling from massive Stacker crashes. I reckon we'd be far further forward with nuclear fusion today had it not been for Stacker irretrievably trashing everyone's research. Oh and Qemm was another util that had variable results, albeit far less destructive. When I look at PCs now and think back to how we had to deal with MSDOS and its 640kB limit, its 64kB block size and how everything the system required had to be loaded into the first 640kB, and had to be loaded in the correct order to make the most efficient use of the memory. Nowadays we just take it all for granted.

Kids these days have probably never even heard of CP/M never mind learning with it!

Them was hard times, but we were happy.
