Oh my! That's definitely spaced me out for the rest of the day
I want one of these! However... according to BoingBoing's article, it's a mere $7K so, err, I'll get right on that...

That is so incredibly, amazingly awesome!!
Imagine the possibilities for cartography and the fluid worldbuilding.
You could shape a world them take a photo from any angle and sketch it on the computer or something like that.
That would be so, so fun to play with.
I love how it's just sand.
I have no words for how cool that is. But there are also a ton of other possibilities for such a peripheral input too. Or at least the idea behind it.
Its a shame we haven't developed the technology to make the interaction flow both ways - so that the water actually erodes the sand in the tray.
But maybe dreaming like that is what drives these fascinating developments in the first place

you can do that for a lot less than 7K
i have seen a dyi for someones kid using i think andios
but all you need is 4( or 8 ) cameras for "multi image stereo "
nasa's "vision workbench " or "OpenCV" or AIMS "Stereo-pipeline" and a few other tools can use the images to plot the changes and then use a projector on the sand box
really a bit simple

What a neat idea. I would also like to play with that, but.... $7K.... wow are they using sand made from gold ?
Wow, that is so cool! :O I really, really want to try that.
Very cool indeed.
