    New Guild Applicant here!

Long-time RPG player, interested in exploring GIMP for creating maps. I see several "Award Winner" posts that I'll be following along with to see how well it works.

Also a long-time programmer, interested in procedurally generated maps and automation of things (eg adding borders). I have a working world map created in my TOME module (see te4.org) via a simple noise function, but while initially neat is kinda boring.

Hi, and welcome to the Guild. For the procedural generation of maps, have you seen the stuff mewo2 has done (this is his site). He's also got a fun Twitter bot, which generates a little map every hour. For making maps in Gimp, I suggest you have a browse through the tutorials area, as there are many Gimp tuts. This is a good place to start.

Hope you can find what you're looking for, but if you need help, just holler.

    Thanks, Chickpea!

I'm already ready those posts, and will check out mewo2's stuff.

On the same topic, are there any systems that can build a map (of any kind, to start) from a config file? (I'm having a hard time using the forum search, maybe I'm just being dense ...)

    what type of maps

i use Blender to make whole world maps using the nodes

they still need post processing but it is a good starting point
    matching pair heightmap and texture

now this is a special type of map ( really a 3d texture )

for 2.5 d ink line maps you need outer tools

"worldengin" can do somewhat random fantasy maps

That's what I get for not providing context :-)

The first thing I'd look for is aligned to my question in the old school DND GIMP tutorial - is there a some way to auto-draw such a map from a more codified format?

Second thing already answered by johnvanvliet - I've played a bit with heightmaps and noise functions, I will take a look at Blender, and a pipeline of post-processing.

    Thanks, ChickPea and johnvanvliet!

Thanks, john! I'm creating a gimp script-fu to help.
