Wip July 2022 Challenge: Ancient Menoriand

Here's my prompt. I have chosen the first choice: Menoriand, an ancient world of silver peaks, sunlit jungles, and cratered fields. I will post a WIP as soon as I have made a good start.

That's a good one! Although I'm not sure how you are going to tackle such a huge task. Looking forward to follow it.

Ambitious! But definitely possible. Good luck!

    Thank you both!

As I normally try to do in these contests, I am trying a new style for me. I'm sketching this digitally in Gimp, with the exception of the lovely mountain brushes shared by Cereth on these forums several years ago. Once I finish the sketch I will be coloring and labeling it as well.

I have put down the base colors. Next up the water, including the waterfall which will come down from the lakes. Then another layer of colors, detailing, and shadowing. I'm working on some icons separately which I will add as well.

Edit: I will probably change the trees, as this method does not really look right with the rest of the map.

They'll work okay if you give them trunks and a few clearings, just right now they look kind of like floating bushes instead of forests.

Agreed. I also feel like stylistically, the texture based approach looks a bit off with the rest.

Still quite a bit more to do on the texturing and shadowing, but making progress. Haven't gotten around to remaking the forests yet, but will do so.

See, since you're now using other realistic textures I think you can get away with the textured forests, since the style fits the sky and water. Nice waterfall drama.
