Post Mapping with layer styles in Photoshop.

That's right. I've tried using styles (only) in Photoshop to speed up the mapping.

Made 3 styles. One for the land, one for mountains, and one for wood. You can see the result below. Now I can make maps ultra fast (just paint with the pencil tool with black paint on the correct layer!) but the quality is maybe not the best... but maybe as a start? Just add some shadowing etc...

What do you think? This is just what I came up with this evening so I think the result can be loads better with some tweaking. I bet someone else has made maps this way before so some input would be nice.

Some kind of speed test. This one took 15 minutes to make (empty layers with styles premade).

Looking good. We should start building up a library of layer styles. Do a search on Soixante who did a great tutorial on layer style mountains. Unfortunately he posted it round about the same time as Pasis and it was eclipsed by Pasis mountain tutorial.
